Cougars Conclude Action at Ted Nelson Invitational

Houston secures 11 podium finishes and set 12 personal bests
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Houston Track and Field program found success in its first road meet of the 2024 indoor season with three Cougars grabbing first-place and 11 podium finishes at the Ted Nelson Invitational inside the R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track on Saturday.
Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi, who was named to The Bowerman Preseason Watch List, earned a first-place finish in the 60-meter with a time of 6.65, landing him the 17th fastest mark in the nation.
Graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford recorded the 10th fastest time in the country and finished first in the 800-meter with a time of 2:07.09. This marked Beckford's first 800-meter race of the season as she ran the one-mile last Friday.
Graduate distance runner Claire Meyer ended the day for Houston as she secured first in the 3000-meter, posting a time of 9:43.21. Meyer pulled away at the 1800-meter mark and never looked back as she finished with a 10-second lead over the field.
Eight other Cougars finished on the podium as graduate Ethan Marshall grabbed second in the weight throw with a distance of 18.67 meters (61-3). Marshall is now fourth all-time in school history with this mark.
On the women's side, sophomore Zaeda Houff finished third in the weight throw with a 16.89 meter (55-5) throw, setting a personal best. Freshman Cordell Nwonkeji claimed third in the shot put with a distance of 17.01 meter (55-9.75) to earn a personal best.
In the pole vault, graduate Christyan Sampy finished second with a height of 5.52 meter (18-1.25) while senior Grant Levesque posted a third-place mark of 5.22 meters (17-1.5). Levesque also competed in the 60-meter hurdles where he set a personal best time of 7.89 in the prelims.
Senior De'Vion Wilson ran to a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 7.86.
Freshman jumper Antrea Mita shined in his Cougar debut as he placed third in the high jump with a height of 2.06 meters (6-9). Freshman Jay Avery earned third in the long jump with a distance of 7.42 meters (24-4.25).
