Women’s Golf Set to Tee off at Schooner Fall Classic

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Houston Women's Golf program returns to action when it competes at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club beginning Saturday morning.
Schools will play 18 holes each day beginning Saturday with the Final Round starting Monday morning.
Saturday's First Round begins at 8:30 a.m., with the Cougars starting at 9:50 a.m.

MEET the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gumm, Houston will be represented by freshman Ellen Yates, senior Nicole Abelar, sophomore Moa Svedenskiold, sophomore Alexa Saldana and freshman Maelynn Kim. Junior Hyeonji Kang will compete as an individual.
In the season-opening Sam Golden Invitational on Sept. 11-12, the Cougars assembled one of the finest performances in NCAA history.
With a score of 48-under 816 at Oakmont Country Club, Houston posted the fourth-lowest 54-hole team total in NCAA history and set a school record. Six Houston student-athletes combined to record 17 rounds of par or better, including 10 in the 60s.
Making her collegiate debut, Yates finished at 14-under 202 with a Final-Round 66 to earn medalist honors and become the fastest Cougar to win an individual title in program history.
Senior Nicole Abelar tied for second at 204, thanks to 67s in the First and Final Rounds, while sophomore and All-Conference performer Moa Svedenskiold tied for seventh at 206 after a 66 in the First Round.
TEAM FIELD
Houston will compete in a 15-team field against Florida State, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, New Mexico, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU, Texas State, Tulsa, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and host Oklahoma.
PAIRINGS
For Saturday's First Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.
Saldana starts the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 10:10 a.m. with Saldana (10:20 a.m.), Svedenskiold (10:30 a.m.), Abelar (10:40 a.m.) and Yates (10:50 a.m) following. Kang begins her round at 9:50 a.m., off No. 10.

A year ago, the Cougars finished fourth at the Schooner Fall Classic with a score of 6-under 834.
Natalie Saint Germain tied for 10th with a score of 3-under 207 and set the Houston 18-hole record with a 64 in the Final Round. Svedenskiold tied for 13th at 208 after shooting 69-68 in the final two rounds.
UP NEXT
Following the Schooner Fall Classic, the Cougars tees off at the Illini Invitational at Medinah on Oct. 9-10 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill.
From there, Houston closes the fall season when it competes at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas, on Oct. 20-22.
Following the holiday break, the Cougars open their spring season when they play at the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Club in Nassau, Bahamas, on Feb. 12-13, 2024.
