Kim Leads Women's Golf after Schooner Fall Classic First Round

Freshman fires 66 to tie for second; Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold tied for fourth with 67
NORMAN, Okla. – University of Houston Women's Golf freshman Maelynn Kim fired a 4-under 66 to lead the Cougars and tie for second following the First Round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
As a team, #20 Houston posted a score of 6-under 274 and stood in second, four strokes behind first-day leader Wake Forest. Virginia Tech stood in third at 280 with Tulsa (281), Iowa State (283), host Oklahoma (284), Kansas State (284), Purdue (284), North Texas (284) and Oklahoma State (284) completing the Top 10.
Schools will play 18 holes each day with the Final Round starting Monday morning.
Competing in only her second collegiate event, Kim drained five birdies with only one bogey to lead the Cougars. Starting off No. 1, she quickly moved under par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3.
The Katy, Texas, native and Seven Lakes High School product endured her lone bogey of the day at No. 7 and regained the stroke with a birdie on the next hole.
She started her back nine with three straight pars and then drained a pair of birdies in a two-hole stretch at Nos. 13-15 to finish with a 66.
Sophomore and 2023 All-Conference performer joined Kim under par with a 67. She enjoyed her first birdie of the day at No. 2 and fought through a bogey at No. 5 to make eagle-3 on the par-5 12th hole. The Halmstad, Sweden, native enjoyed birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 for a 67.
Sophomore Alexa Saldana posted an even-par 70 and was tied for 16th while senior Nicole Abelar was tied for 23rd at 71. Freshman Ellen Yates was tied for 45th at 73 while junior Hyeonji Kang, playing as an individual, was tied for 57th at 74.
Wake Forest's Carolina Lopez Chacarra held the individual lead with a 63. Kim joined TCU's Lois Lau in a tie for second while Svedenskiold joined Tess Blair (Iowa State), Haley Vargas (Kansas State) and Morgan Ketchum (Virginia Tech) in a tie for fourth.
