HOUSTON – The Houston track and field team will be well represented at the 2023 World Championships beginning Saturday as senior Shaun Maswanganyi and former Cougars Cecilia Tamayo-Garza and Nora Monie represent South Africa, Mexico and Cameroon, respectively.
Â
Less than three weeks after taking silver in the 100-meter dash at the World University Games for South Africa, Maswanganyi will represent South Africa and Houston at the World Championships in the 100, 200-meter dash and the 400-meter relay.
Â
Maswanganyi posted a 10.06 second time at the World University Games on Aug. 2 taking silver and then led the South Africans to a bronze medal in the 400 relay on Aug. 6.
Â
The senior is coming off a career-best collegiate season in which he set the school record in the 100 in 9.91 seconds at the NCAA Championships and ran the third-fastest 200 time in program history in the 200 with a time of 19.99 seconds, both personal records. Maswanganyi finished third in the 100 and fifth in the 200 at the NCAA Championships.
Â
Tamayo-Garza enters the World Championships after breaking her own Mexican record in the 200-meter dash twice in 2023. The former Cougar broke her own record in the 200 at the Mt. SAC Relays before running the second-fastest 200 in program history at the American Championships with a 22.45 second time.
Â
Monie, who is the programs school record holder in the discus and ranks third in the hammer, will represent Cameroon in the discus. Monie's 58.05-meter toss in 2021 at the Drake Relays is nearly four meters better than the second-best mark in school history. Monie's personal record 58.53 was set this year in June.
Â
Maswanganyi will begin competition on Saturday in the 100 preliminary rounds. Monie will compete on Sunday in the discus. Both Tamayo-Garza and Maswanganyi will compete in the 200 beginning on Wednesday. Maswanganyi's relay squad is set to start its preliminary race Friday, Aug. 25.
