Cougars workout out Friday evening before attending first Australian Rules Football game
MELBOURNE, Australia – Following a beautiful day at the Great Barrier Reef, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program traveled to Melbourne on Friday for the final two games of their 12-day tour of Australia.
After a three-and-a-half hour flight from Cairns, the Cougars ate lunch in their hotel before heading to practice. Following that workout, Houston enjoyed its first Australian Rules Football Game between the Collingwood Magpies and the Geelong Cats, two of the AFL's premier teams, at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Collingwood overcame an early deficit to take a 109-101 win.
The Cougars will meet the Frankston Blues at 4 a.m. (CDT)/7 p.m. (AEST) Saturday, inside Dreamstreet Lending Arena. The Blues are part of Australasia's National Basketball league.
Houston is 1-1 on its tour of Australia. The Cougars opened with a 93-52 win over the East All-Stars in Sydney on Monday before falling to FIBA's third-ranked Australian National Team, 99-65, in Cairns on Wednesday.
In two games, senior guard L.J. Cryer leads four Cougars averaging double-digit points with 19.5 points per game and has drained a team-high four 3-pointers. Sophomore guard stands second with 11.5 points per game while senior guard Damian Dunn is a close third with 11.0 points per contest. Senior guard Mylik Wilson is averaging 10.5 points per game and ranks second with 3.5 assists per game.
Competing in his first collegiate season, freshman forward Joseph Tugler is averaging a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game while sophomore guard Terrance Arceneaux stands second with 5.5 boards per game.
For Houston fans preparing to follow the team on its social media sites, the east coast of Australia is 15 hours ahead of Houston (When it is 1 p.m. (CDT) in Houston, it will be 4 a.m. (AEST) the next day in Australia).
This is the third international tour for the Cougars under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson with previous trips to Italy (2019) and China (2015). This is the third continent on which the Cougars will compete but it marks the program's first visit to the Southern Hemisphere.
