Guard LJ Cryer leads with 15 points and six assists; Sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp tops Red Team with 19 points and five treys
HOUSTON – University of Houston senior guard LJ Cryer posted 15 points with five 3-pointers and six assists to lead the White Team to a 58-49 win over the Red Team inside the Fertitta Center on Tuesday evening.
As the Cougars prepare to leave later this week for their third international trip under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, Tuesday's scrimmage gave Houston fans their first glimpse of the 2023-24 Cougars. Houston will compete in four games in three cities while visiting many Australian attractions on Aug. 4-15.
The Cougars played Tuesday's scrimmage with a regulation FIBA basketball and a 24-second shot clock during a pair of 12-minutes halves.
The White Team jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first five-and-a-half minutes and never looked back in taking the win. Cryer, a product of Katy's Morton Ranch High School and transfer from Baylor, drilled his first three 3-point attempts while senior guard and Temple transfer Damian Dunn five points with a three of his own to start the run.
The Red Team pulled to within 34-30 following sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp's 3-pointer with 8:38 left in the game, but freshman forward and former Cypress Falls High School star Joseph Tugler converted an old-fashioned 3-pointer play on the ensuing possession, and the Red Team would move no closer than five points for the rest of the game.
Cryer finished the night shooting 5-of-6 from the arc. Tugler scored 13 points with three rebounds – including three offensive boards – and an assist while Dunn totaled 12 points with a pair of steals. Senior guard Mylik Wilson totaled six points, four assists, two steals and a game-high 10 rebounds in the win.
Sharp led all players with 19 points, thanks to 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from long range. Sophomore guard Terrance Arceneaux totaled 10 points with an assist, and senior point guard Jamal Shead added nine points with four assists and a team-high four steals.
