Two Cougars Tabbed to Preseason All-Big 12 Conference Team

Sauer and Georgiades earn a spot on the league’s all-conference team as Houston transitions to Big 12 Conference
HOUSTON – Volleyball senior Kate Georgiades and graduate Kenna Sauer captured the University of Houston Athletic Department's first Big 12 Conference honors as the pair was voted to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, the league announced Tuesday.Â

Houston, who was voted to finish sixth in the league in the coaches' poll released Monday, is one of five teams to have multiple preseason honorees, joining Baylor, BYU, Kansas State and Texas.

Georgiades, a three-time All-American, earned a spot as the lone libero on the preseason All-Big 12 Team. The two-time American Athletic Conference Libero of the Year, she earned the award unanimously after leading the conference and finishing sixth nationally with 687 digs in 2022. She currently owns the No. 5 and No. 6 spots on Houston's single-season digs list and sits at No. 9 all-time while also on pace to break the program's digs per set record with 5.40.Â

Georgiades earned six honors in 2022 as The American's Defensive Player of the Week and posted a double-double with 20 digs and 10 assists against South Alabama. She's tallied 75 career double-digit digs performances, with 37 breaking the 20-dig mark.Â

A two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree, Sauer joined the Cougars as a graduate transfer from Texas Tech. In two seasons with the Red Raiders, she tallied 787 kills in 217 sets, averaging 3.63 per frame. Prior to her arrival in Lubbock, Texas, Sauer played in 24 matches over two seasons for Mizzou, where she tallied 69 kills and 31 digs. Overall, she's played in 83 matches in her collegiate career, posting 856 kills, 612 digs and 144 blocks in 284 sets.

In 2022, she tallied 16 double-doubles with 27 double-digit kill performances and 16 double-digit dig performances. She led Texas Tech in kills in each of her seasons there and helped the program to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 20 years during the 2021 season.Â

The Cougars finished last season with a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament, marking the team's farthest postseason run since an Elite Eight showing in 1994. With a 19-1 league record, Houston captured its first conference championship since 1999 during the team's last season in The American. The team tied its highest final ranking in program history at No. 17 and won 30 matches for the first time since the NCAA started sponsoring women's volleyball.
