Men’s Golf to Compete at NCAA Auburn Regional

Cougars will compete as No. 9 seed at Auburn University Club on May 15-17
HOUSTON – For the third straight season, the University of Houston Men's Golf program will compete as a team in NCAA Regional play. Houston will compete as the No. 9 seed at the NCAA Auburn Regional at Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala., on May 15-17.
The Cougars will be joined at that Regional by No. 1 seed Vanderbilt, No. 2 seed Tennessee, No. 3 seed Auburn, No. 4 seed Colorado State, No. 5 seed Ohio State, No. 6 seed Washington, No. 7 seed TCU, No. 8 seed Chattanooga, No. 10 seed Marquette, No. 11 seed Indiana, No. 12 seed August and No. 13 seed Siena.
Alex Goff (Kentucky), Brantley Scott (Troy), Erik Jansson (Jacksonville State), Tobias Jonsson (Mercer), Cameron Clarke (Southern Miss), Brian Ma (Harvard), Jackson Skeen (Tennessee Tech), Luka Naglic (Arkansas State), Hugo Thyr (South Alabama) and Killian McGinley (Fairfield) will compete as individuals.
The top five teams and top student-athlete (not on an advancing team) at each of the six NCAA Regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships to be played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 26-31.
Six NCAA Regionals will be played at sites across the nation. Those venues include Eagle Eye (Bath, Michigan); Bear's Best Las Vegas (Las Vegas); The Institute Golf Club (Morgan Hill, Calif.); Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Okla.) and The Cliffs at Keowee Falls (Salem, S.C.).
The Cougars watched the NCAA Selection Show on Golf Channel as a team inside the main clubhouse at Golf Club of Houston with fans and Athletics administrators.
ABOUT the COUGARS
The Cougars earned their NCAA Regional berth with three stellar days of play at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., on April 21-23.
Behind senior Austyn Reily's eagle with the first group on the first hole of the Championships, the Cougars never trailed at the tournament and captured its first conference team title since 2013 with a score of 9-under 831. Senior Santiago De La Fuente fired three straight rounds in the 60s and captured the individual championships at 10-under 200 for his second individual crown in 2022-23.
This season, Fuente leads the Cougars with a 70.34 scoring average, which ranks as the second-best single-season mark in program history. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native also tops Houston with 25 rounds of par or better, including 13 in the 60s, and opened the spring season by winning the Border Olympics individual title at Laredo Country Club on Feb. 13-14.
For his impressive play throughout the season, De La Fuente was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year earlier Tuesday.
Senior Austyn Reily has posted a 72.84 average this season and joined De La Fuente with three straight rounds of par or better to finish second at The American Championships with a score of 7-under 203. He joined De La Fuente on the All-Conference Team, his second straight season to earn a place on the postseason squad.
The 2023 American Championships marked the first time that the Cougars finished 1-2 at a Conference tournament since Andy Sanders (1st, 212) and B.J. Staten (t-2nd, 215) accomplished that feat at the 2000 Conference USA Championships at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla (April 17-19, 2000).
Sophomore Wolfgang Glawe stands second on the team with a 72.32 average and 16 rounds of par or better. Competing in his first season with the Cougars after transferring from Kansas, Glawe emerged during the spring season and enters NCAA Regional play with four straight Top-25 finishes.
The St. Leon-Rot Germany, native joined De La Fuente and Reily on the All-American Athletic Conference Team.
NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
For the third straight season and the ninth time under Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars will compete as a team in NCAA Regional play. This also will mark the 23rd NCAA Regional appearance in program history.
A year ago, the Cougars finished 12th in the NCAA Stockton Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
