Sophomore Turiya Coleman was named to second team by the coaches association
HOUSTON – University of Houston softball third baseman Turiya Coleman earned Second Team All-Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organization announced Thursday.
Coleman, a sophomore, made waves in her first season with the Cougars, being named a unanimous first team American Athletic All-
Conference selection. In addition, Coleman became the first player in program history to break the .500 single-season on-base percentage record with a mark of .503.
The Houston native put together one of the best seasons in program history. Her .397 batting average finished fifth in team history, and her .645 slugging percentage finished 10th. Her 17 stolen bases on the year were the ninth most by a Cougar in a season and the fifth most per game (0.34).
Coleman became the first Cougar to hit multiple grand slams in a season since 2018, hitting two during the season. She ultimately led the team in runs scored (33), hits (56), doubles (11), extra-base hits (19), total bases (91), walks (26), hit-by-pitches (five), average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and stolen bases.
While primarily playing third base, Coleman split time at other positions, making 12 starts behind the plate.
The NFCA Central Region, which Houston falls into, incorporates select teams from The American, ASUN, Big 12 Conference, Southland Conference, Southwestern Athletic Conference, Sun Belt Conference and the Summit League. Coleman is now eligible to be voted as an All-American. NFCA will release All-American teams on May 31.
