Softball Earns Postseason Conference Awards

Cantu and Coleman unanimously voted as first team all-conference selections
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball program earned a pair of postseason honors from the American Athletic Conference with senior Bree Cantu and sophomore Turiya Coleman being unanimously selected as First Team All-American Athletic Conference selections, the league office announced Wednesday.

Cantu earned her selection as a non-pitcher utility, while Coleman's spot on the team was as at third base. It's the first time Houston has earned multiple selections to the first team since 2019.Â
ABOUT BREE CANTU
Having led The American in multiple statistical categories during league play entering the season's final weekend, Cantu paced The American in doubles (8) and finished second in conference play in batting average (.472) and hits (25).Â

Cantu, slashing .350/.443/.613 on the season, led the Cougars with nine home runs, including four in conference play, and also paced the team with 35 RBIs, 24 walks and four sacrifice flies.Â
Â
The League City, Texas, native split time between second base, third base and right field this season and posted 16 multi-hit games, including one of three four-hit contests by a Cougar this year. She also tallied a team-best nine multi-RBI games during the 2023 campaign.
Cantu is one of five Cougars to have started every game this year, and her four sacrifice flies this season are tied for the third most in team history. She also sits at third in the conference in total home runs and ninth in slugging percentage.Â

ABOUT TURIYA COLEMAN
In an incredible sophomore campaign, Coleman has led the way offensively for the Cougar all season. Starting in all 49 games, Coleman has split time between third base and catcher, however has started a majority of her games at the hot corner.

With a .397/.494/.645 slash, Coleman paces the team in all three categories and also leads the team with 32 runs scored, 11 doubles, 91 total bases, 17 stolen bases and five hit-by-pitches.Â

Coleman has posted a staggering 19 multi-hit games and was one of two Houston players to tally a double-digit hitting streak this season. The Houston native also recorded a 15-game reached base streak to begin the 2023 slate.

Coleman was the first Houston player to hit multiple grand slams in a season since 2018 with two, including one against Memphis in conference play. Overall, she has hit eight home runs for Houston this season.
