Houston wins eight events during first annual Cameron Burrell Alumni Invitational
HOUSTON – A soggy, rainy day didn't stop the Houston track and field team from competing in the first-annual Cameron Burrell Invitational on Friday which included eight event wins and a new program top five mark.
In an emotional moment, Houston honored the legacy of the late Cameron Burrell during the meet with his father, former head coach Leroy Burrell, mother Michelle, siblings and family in attendance with a tribute video and
recognition of the three-time national champion who passed away in 2021. The meet was named after Burrell for his accomplishments, legacy as a Cougar, and to bring awareness to mental health.
Sophomore Daisy Monie etched her name in the Cougar record books with a personal record 15.45-meter throw in the shot put. The mark moves the sophomore into fifth all-time in program history in the event. Monie finished third overall behind senior teammate Nu'uausala Tuilefano who improved her conference leading mark with a 15.99-meter season-best throw; Tuilefano finished second overall.
All seven of the Cougars' event wins came on the track as Houston won both women's relays, both the men's and women's 200-meter dash, the men's 100-meter dash, women's 100-meter hurdles, men's 110-meter hurdles and the women's 400-meter dash.
