Cougar hurdlers win three events, pair set top three all-time marks
HOUSTON – Four Houston track and field student-athletes won events on Saturday at Rice's J. Fred Duckett Twilight meet and posted a pair of top three program records as well.
Senior Sydni Townsend moved up the 400-meter hurdle record book, running 57.53 to win the event. Townsend ran the fastest time by a Cougar since 2018 and won the event by 0.08 seconds.
The Cougars went 1-2-4 in the men's 400 hurdles, with senior DJ Akindele beating junior De'Vion Wilson by 0.03 seconds. Sophomore Dillon Leacock finished fourth overall. Akindele, Wilson and Leacock's times of 51.64, 51.67 and 52.38 seconds rank first, second and fourth in the American Athletic Conference after Saturday's meet.
Junior Lloyd Frilot continued his run of form, racing to the third-fastest 800-meter run in school history of 1:48.81. Frilot leads the American and ties Karim Alston's 1998 time in the event.
Running into a headwind, sophomore Destiny Smith won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.52 seconds for her second 100 hurdles win in just her third appearance of the year.
