Cougars Drop Finale Against Bulls

HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team took a 13-2 loss to close the series against South Florida on Sunday afternoon at Schroeder Park.

Despite earning the series win on Saturday, the Cougars (20-16, 6-3) could not manage the series sweep dropping the final contest against South Florida. Sophomore starting pitcher Cade Citelli (2-4) threw 3.2 innings allowing four earned runs and dropped his fourth game of the season. South Florida's (16-22, 4-3) Jack Cebert (3-1) tossed 7.1 innings allowing only one earned run to earn the win.

Game Highlights:

Zach Arnold and Justin Murray extended their reached-base streaks to 32 straight games. Arnold has reached base in every single game he has played in while Murray has found his way on base in every game since his second Cougar appearance.
With a two-outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Justin Murray extended his hit streak to 14 games. His 14-game streak is the longest hit streak this season

Key Innings:
South Florida came alive to start the game plating back-to-back inning home runs for a 4-0 lead after two frames. They continued their momentum in the fifth inning doubling their lead to 8-0.

6^th | After the Bulls plated a run in the top of the sixth, the Cougars broke up the shutout scoring their first run of the game. A pinch-hit single from Cary Arbolida put the Cougars on base before sophomore outfielder Malachi Lott grounded out but moved Arbolida to second. Zach Arnold's second hit of the day came by way of a single up the middle and brought Arbolida home for a 9-1 score.

8^th | South Florida continued on its scoring tirade, putting up two more runs in the top of the eighth inning for an 11-1 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars got into scoring position as senior shortstop Ian McMillan reached on a hit by pitch before moving to second on a Bulls error. Lott recorded the second hit by pitch of the inning to load the bases for junior third baseman Zach Arnold. On a hard-fought at bat, Arnold sent the ball to the outfield on a sacrifice fly allowing McMillan to cross the plate. South Florida closed out the game with two more runs in the top of the ninth and the Cougars succumbed to a 13-2 loss.

UP NEXT:
The Cougars close out its home stand with a midweek matchup against Houston Christian on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast on The Varsity Network. The matchup will be $2 Tuesday where fans can take advantage of $2 tickets at the box office and $2 hot dogs at concessions.
