Tennis Takes Down North Texas, 4-1

Slisane, Schouten and Dzemeshkevich tally singles points against Mean Green
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program earned its way back into the win column as it defeated North Texas, 4-1, Friday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.

Houston (12-8) earned the decisive doubles point along with three singles points while North Texas (10-12) only escaped with one singles point.

In doubles, North Texas took the first match on court two as Olivia Malm and Nformi Stadfany defeated sophomore Elena Trencheva and freshman Gabriela Cortes, 6-4. Both matches on courts one and three saw Houston hold off comeback bids as freshman Sophie Schouten and junior Laura Slisane evened the playing field with a 7-5 win over Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais. Sitting tied at 6-6, senior Azul Pedemonti and freshman Sonya Kovalenko pulled through with a 7-3 tiebreaking victory to win the match 7-6 and earn the Cougars the doubles point.

In singles play, Slisane quickly doubled Houston's lead after defeating Adams 6-2, 6-2. After North Texas got on the board with a singles victory on court four, Houston established another two-point lead as Schouten defeated Stadfany in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. With all other matches in the third set, sophomore Maria Dzemeshkevich picked up the winning singles point after beating Morais 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

The Cougars aim to finish the regular season with back-to-back wins with an in-city clash on Saturday at 10 a.m. against No. 56 Rice on Senior Night.

Houston will head to Orlando, Fla., for the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships held April 19-22 at the USTA National Campus.

Based on the seeding, No. 6-11 will begin action in the first round on Wednesday, April 19. No. 1-5 will head straight to quarterfinals on Thursday, April 20. Seeds for the conference championships are determined by the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
