Tennis Set to Close Regular Season with Pair of Matches

Cougars welcome North Texas, #56 Rice
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Tennis program will begin its final two-match homestand of the season where it will face North Texas and #56 Rice beginning Friday at the Barbara Wallace Tennis Facility
The Cougars (11-8) are looking to get back in the win column following a 5-2 loss against UTSA on Monday. Sophie Schouten and Gabriela Cortes each earned a singles victory against the Roadrunners, their ninth of the season.
The first match is set to take place against North Texas at 11 a.m., Friday, and will close out the regular season against #56 Rice at 10 a.m., Saturday.
Prior to the start of the Saturday match, the Cougars will celebrate their three seniors, Sofia Chang, Azul Pedemonti and Manasi Reddy for their accomplishments with the program.
Fans can attend both matches free of charge and no student claim is necessary.
SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
· North Texas is in its 17th season under Head Coach Sujay Lama.
· The Mean Green are 10-9 on the season.
· In its last matchup, North Texas dropped a 4-1 contest against UTA (April 12, 2023).
· The Cougars own the all-time series, 7-2.
· The last time Houston and North Texas met, Pedemonti clinched the match to earn a 4-3 victory for the Cougars (April 3, 2022).
SCOUTING THE OWLS
· Rice is in its 15th season under Head Coach Elizabeth Schmidt.
· The Owls are currently ranked #56 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) poll.
· Rice is 10-7 on the season.
· In its last matchup, the Owls fell 5-2 to #54 SMU (April 8, 2023).
· Rice own the all-time series, 20-12.
· The last time Houston and Rice met, the Owls claimed a 4-0 decision (April 9, 2022).
UP NEXT
After closing out the regular season at home, Houston will set its eyes on the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships. The American Championships will be held April 19-22 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Based on the seeding, No. 6-11 will begin action in the first round on Wednesday, April 19. No. 1-5 will head straight to quarterfinals on Thursday, April 20. Seeds for the conference championships are determined by the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
