Softball Starts Conference Play at Memphis

Cougars begin its last league slate in The American
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team heads to Memphis to kick off its conference slate with a three-game series this weekend.
Houston and Memphis play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon and close out the series at noon Sunday. Saturday's games will both be streamed on ESPN+.
The series marks the end of Houston's 16 game road swing, its last home game having been played nearly a month ago on Feb. 26.

THE SERIES
- Houston is 40-12 all-times against Memphis. Under Vesely, the Cougars are 12-3 against the Tigers.
- Houston swept last season's series against Memphis, including a run-rule win.
- The Cougars are 13-1-2 in series against the Tigers, only dropping a three-game series in 2009.
- Houston has a three-game win streak against Memphis.
- Turiya Coleman enters the weekend with multiple stats among the best in the NCAA. Nationally, she ranks 19th in hits (40), 23rd in batting average (.455) and 33rd in total bases (64).
- Houston was placed at #91 in RPI entering the weekend matchup. RPI is released by the NCAA every weekday morning. The Cougars rank fourth in The American in RPI, behind Wichita State, UCF and South Florida, all three being 2021 NCAA tournament teams.
- Houston is 41-21-1 in the first series of conference play, including a 7-8-1 mark under Coach Vesely and a 13-10-1 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
- Among active players, Kenna Wilkey has the 21st most appearances (126), the 28th most innings pitched (537), 38th most wins (49) and the 34th most strikeouts (454).
- The Cougars boast one of the tougher nonconference schedules in the conference. Nationally, Houston has the 58th strongest schedule, only behind UCF's 43rd toughest schedule in The American.
- Houston plays 16 home games and no away games in the month of February, followed by 16 neutral site/away games and no home games in March. Houston is the only known school to have played its opening month at its home stadium, followed by an entire month away from it.
- Houston ranks 31st nationally with 0.43 double plays per game.
- The Cougars are playing their last season in The American prior to joining the Big 12 Conference next season.
- Wilkey picked up a pair of preseason honors, being named the preseason American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year by both D1Softball and Extra Innings Softball.
