SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 9th meeting between the two teams with Houston holding the edge 6-2. Last season, the two teams met three times including a doubleheader on Feb. 27 where the Cougars took both games.
LAST TIME OUT
In the battle of Third Ward, the Cougars came away with a win against Texas Southern, their 12th-straight win against the Tigers. Travis Phelps earned his first win of the season while Josh Ekness tallied his first save.
ON THE ROAD
The Cougars return to the road for its second consecutive road series. Last week, Houston appeared in the Kleberg Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
400 WIN WATCH
Houston head coach Todd Whitting is nearing his 400th career win. After 13 season's with the Cougars, Whitting is currently at 385 wins.
SPORTS CENTER TOP 10
One Sunday afternoon against Incarnate Word, graduate transfer Drew Bianco made an over-the-wall catch, robbing a home run. The play was picked up by ESPN, Sports Center and the MLB among others. It was the second week in a row that Bianco had a play on the Sport Center's Top 10 list. The week previous Bianco stole a home run against the Golden Bears Caleb Lomavita.
14 RETIRED. Against Texas Southern, the Houston pitchers retired 14 batters. Both Travis Phelps and Josh Ekness struck out five batters each while Malachi Lott tallied two and Maddux Miller and Paul Schmitz knocked out one a piece.
RELIABLE STARTERS. Through eight games, Houston has relied on familiar faces to lead the charge. Ian McMillan, Anthony Tulimero, Zach Arnold, Brandon Burckel and Alex Lopez have been in the starting lineup in all eight games.
NEW FACES
The Cougars have added a multitude of new faces to their roster for the 2023 season. Six of the new players comes to Houston with previous Division I experience including from Power 5 schools LSU, Ole Miss and Baylor.
TULIMERO TIME. Houston standout Anthony Tulimero returns for his junior season with the Cougars. The Kansas transfer led the team in both batting average and hits. He was named a 2022 Buster Posey National Catcher of the Year semifinalist as well as an all-conference honoree. He led the American Athletic Conference in batters caught stealing at 23 as well as logged 17 multi-hit games including a team-best six three hit contests.
THE BIG THREE. Houston's three standout players, Anthony Tulimero, Ian McMillan and Zach Arnold returned for another season together. All three players were named to a 2022 post season award list including the Gold Glove Award (Zach Arnold - finalist), Buster Posey Award (Anthony Tulimero - semifinalist) and Brooks Wallace Award (Ian McMillan - semifinalist). They also each made appearances on D1Baseball's Top 50 preseason position rankings. Tulimero ranked as the nation's No. 11 catcher while McMillan was tabbed No. 19 among shortstops and Arnold ranked No. 47. Lastly, the trio was named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason All-Conference Team.
