Softball Faces Off Against #21/#20 Baylor

Cougars play final weekend series before starting conference play next weekend
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball program continues its 16-game streak away from Cougar Softball Stadium with a three-game series in Waco, Texas, against the #21/#20 Baylor Bears.
The series is Houston's last prior to starting conference play next week at Memphis. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., while Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch. The series finale starts at 1 p.m. Sunday.

THE SERIES
- Houston is 15-22 all-time against Baylor. Under Coach Vesely, the Cougars are 4-4 against the Bears.
- Houston split a pair of meetings with Baylor last season.
- The Cougars have played the Bears nearly every year since 2001, only not meeting in 2003, 2012 and 2017.
- Houston will face Baylor annually starting next year as part of the team's transition to the Big 12 Conference.
FIRST PITCH
- Turiya Coleman enters the weekend with multiple stats among the best in the NCAA. Nationally, she ranks 14th in hits (37), 18th in batting average (.474), 25th in total bases (60), 27th in doubles (8) and 41st in stolen bases (13).
- Houston was placed at #93 in RPI entering the weekend matchup. RPI is released by the NCAA every weekday morning. The Cougars rank fourth in The American in RPI, behind Wichita State, UCF and South Florida, all three being 2021 NCAA tournament teams.
- The Cougars are looking for their second series win prior to entering conference play next weekend. Houston defeated Tarleton, 2-1 last weekend, after playing in four weekend tournaments to start the year.
- Among active players, Kenna Wilkey has the 21st most appearances (124), the 28th most innings pitched (526), 32nd most wins (49) and the 34th most strikeouts (454).
- The Cougars boast one of the tougher nonconference schedules in the conference. Nationally, Houston has the 58th strongest schedule, only behind UCF's 43rd toughest schedule in The American.
- Houston plays 16 home games and no away games in the month of February, followed by 16 neutral site/away games and no home games in March. Houston is the only known school to have played its opening month at its home stadium, followed by an entire month away from it.
- Houston ranks 34th nationally with 0.44 double plays per game and 56th with five shutouts.
- The Cougars are playing their last season in The American prior to joining the Big 12 Conference next season.
- Kenna Wilkey picked up a pair of preseason honors, being named the preseason American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year by both D1Softball and Extra Innings Softball.
