Maswanganyi Advances, Trio Finish Championships

Junior sprinter posts fifth-fastest 60-meter dash time, automatically qualifies for final
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi finished second in his heat of the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships and three other Houston track and field student-athletes finished as All-American Second Team honorees on Friday.
Maswanganyi used his long strides to finish strong in the semifinal of the 60, running a personal best 6.56 second time which was fast enough to finish second in the heat and automatically advance to Saturday's final.
The Olympian finished 11th overall in the 60 at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships and has a chance to be Houston's first All-American First Team honoree since 2019 if he finishes the race on Saturday, finishing in the top eight.
Houston's first competitor, senior Kelly-Ann Beckford finished her indoor season in the 800-meter run with a 2:10.25 time. Beckford is the first All-American in the women's indoor 800 in program history.
Beckford broke the school record in the 800 three times this season and won the 800 title at the American Athletic Conference Championships in February.
Senior Christyan Sampy became a back-to-back All-American in the pole vault by jumping 5.51 meters. Sampy finished 11th overall and has jumped 5.50-meters or higher in four consecutive meets. Sampy is Houston's first two-time indoor pole vault All-American.
Sampy is the school record holder in the pole vault and won the title at the American Championships in February.
Houston's final competitor of the evening, junior De'Vion Wilson finished his indoor season as an All-American in the 60-meter hurdles. Wilson broke the school record in the 60 hurdles at the Houston Invitational by running 7.69 after breaking the school record in prelims earlier in the meet.
