Onyeje records first-career double-double, four Cougars score in double figures
HOUSTON – Senior Bria Patterson's 14-points paired with redshirt senior Britney Onyeje's first-career double-double led a motivated team performance as the Houston women's basketball team closed the door on Wichita State on Senior Night 62-55 on Wednesday at Fertitta Center.
The Cougars (13-15, 10-5 American) won back-to-back home games to close out the regular season as they shut down the Shockers' (16-13, 6-10 American) second half comeback bid to secure a win in the only meeting this season. Houston improves to 10-1 all-time against Wichita State.
Three of five seniors closed out their final home game in inspiring fashion as Onyeje was a force on the boards with a game-leading 10 rebounds to match her career high. Patterson's 14 points marks her 14th game this season recording 10 or more points while senior Tatyana Hill finished with seven points paired with six rebounds and was active on the defensive end of the court with five steals and four blocks.
After trailing in the early-going, the Cougars hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark an 8-2 run and lead 10-8. Both teams traded scores late in the first quarter as Houston trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter.
The Cougars found momentum in the second quarter as they regained the lead thanks to the duo of senior Tiara Young and junior Laila Blair combining for 16 of Houston's 17 points in the period. The Cougars tightened up defensively as they took a 31-28 lead heading into the locker room.
Blair led the Cougars in scoring at the break with 10 points, all of which the Houston native scored in the second quarter while Patterson, Young and Onyeje all tallied five or more points by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Cougars created some distance after sparking a 9-2 run to lead 44-37 late in the period. A late push by the Shockers cut the deficit to one at 44-43 heading into the fourth.
The game tightened up heading into the final minutes of the game as the Cougars pulled away with a 7-0 run before the Shockers responded with a 6-0 run of their own to trail 57-53. A late 3-pointer by Patterson combined with a Wichita State five-second violation forced by junior Kamryn Jones helped the Cougars hold their seven-point lead with 26 seconds to go. A pair of free throws by Blair secured the lead in the dying seconds.
