HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team's season opener against Virginia was suspended due to a lighting outage in the third inning.
The game is slated to be resumed at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, pending the completion of the day's earlier games. Team officials are considering options for the status of the originally scheduled 5:30 p.m. game.
Tickets from day one of the Houston Invitational will be honored at a future home Houston Softball game, excluding the Texas A&M game on May 3.
Virginia led the game at the time of suspension, 8-1, behind six runs in the third inning.
A two-run homer off the bat of M.C. Eaton in the first inning gave the Cavaliers an early lead. Houston cut into the deficit in its half of the first, with Turiya Coleman scoring on a single by Britaney Shaw.
Virginia had played six runs in the third, with five coming off a pair of home runs. The game was then suspended in the half-inning break.
