Freshman forward named league’s Freshman of the Week for sixth time in 2022-23
HOUSTON – After leading the Cougars to a pair of road wins, University of Houston freshman forward Jarace Walker was honored as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon.
He was named the league's Freshman of the Week for the third straight week and the sixth time during the 2022-23 season after leading the Cougars to road wins at Wichita State and at Temple.
With his award, Walker set a Houston single-season record becoming the first Cougar to earn six Conference weekly awards in a season.
Guard Aubrey Coleman previously held the school record after being named the Conference USA Rookie of the Week five times in 2008-09 and the C-USA Player of the Week five times during the 2009-10 season.
With those road wins, the Cougars improved to 22-2 overall and maintained their lead atop the American Athletic Conference standings with a 10-1 league mark.
ABOUT JARACE WALKER
Walker led the Cougars with 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while connecting on 51.9 percent from the field, including a blister 63.6 3-point field goal percentage.
He started the week with a 15-point effort at Wichita State in front of a sold-out crowd, drilling three of his six tries from beyond the arc. Walker also grabbed five rebounds with two assists, a blocked shot and two steals.
He tied the game at 54-54 with a 3-pointer with 6:11 remaining in the game and gave the Cougars the lead for good against the Shockers with another trey just under two minutes later.
In a battle of the Top-Two-teams in The American on Sunday, Walker poured in a team-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting and tied teammate Marcus Sasser for the league with his fifth 20-point effort of the season.
Walker also led Houston with six rebounds and tied for the team lead with three steals.
After Temple cut the Houston lead to 54-48 with 9:14 left in the game to bring the crowd of 10,206 to its feet, Walker drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to halt the Owl rally. Temple would move no closer than eight points for the rest of the game.
Tulane guard Jalen Cook was named the league's Player of the Week. Cincinnati guard David DeJulius, East Carolina forward Brandon Johnson, Memphis forward DeAndre Williams, South Florida guard Tyler Harris and Wichita State forward James Rojas were named to the weekly Honor Roll.
