Women’s Golf Finishes First Day at ICON Invitational

Super senior Annie Kim tied for 25th to lead Cougars; Super senior Becca Earl with hole-in-one in First Round; Final Round tees off Tuesday morning at Golf Club of Houston
HUMBLE, Texas – University of Houston super senior Annie Kim fired a 4-under 68 in the Second Round of the ICON Invitational to lead the Cougars at Golf Club of Houston on Monday evening.
After posting a 73 in the morning session, the Seoul native rallied in the afternoon with the team's low round of the day. Overcoming a slow start that put her 3-over through the first three holes, Kim played the final 15 holes in 7-under.
She started her rally with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 and rebounding with her final bogey of the round on No. 6 with a birdie on No. 9 to cap her front nine.
Kim started the back nine with an eagle on the 299-yard, par-4 10th hole and then sank three birdies in a 4-hole stretch on Nos. 13-16 before a pair of pars to end the day. She finished the first day in a tie for 25th at 3-under 213.
As a team, the Cougars stood in 14th with a score of 586. The elite field features 12 teams in the nation's Top 50, according to the latest Golfstat rankings.
#10 Texas A&M posted a score of 551 to hold the first-day team lead by a stroke over #27 Iowa State. #11 USC (554), #43 NC State (556), #18 Oklahoma State (557), #50 North Texas (560), Illinois (562), #45 Maryland (566), #29 Texas Tech (566) and #28 SMU (567) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Freshman Moa Svedenskiold was tied for 51st at 146. Super senior Becca Earl was tied for 66th at 146 and enjoyed the Cougars' first hole-in-one of the season on the 145-yard seventh hole.
Junior Delaney Martin was tied for 69th at 150 while freshman Natalie Saint Germain was tied for 87th at 156.
Playing as individuals, freshman Alexa Saldana was tied for 29th at 142 after shooting a 69 in the First Round. Junior Nicole Abelar shot par or lower in both rounds with scores of 71-72 and was tied for 34th at 143 while redshirt freshman Brooke Morales was tied for 61st at 148. Sophomore Anna Economon stood in 90 that 162.
Texas A&M's Zoe Slaughter stood atop the individual leaderboard at 14-under 130 after posting back-to-back 65s. Illinois' Isabel Sy finished second at 131 while Texas State's Junia Gabasa was in third at 133.
The Final Round tees off with an 8 a.m., Tuesday, shotgun start.
THE CHEVRON CHAMPIONSHIP
The Chevron Championship, the first LPGA Tour Major of the season, will take place at The Club at Carlton Woods for the first time on April 20-23.
To further Chevron's commitment of providing access and opportunity for female collegiate golfers, the individual champion of the ICON Invitational will receive a playing spot in The Chevron Championship Official Pro-Am on April 18.

For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Tennessee and Charlotte beginning at 8 a.m.
Svedenskiold begins the First Round at 8 a.m., in the first group off No. 13 with Kim (second group off No. 13), Earl (No. 14), Saint Germain (first group off No. 15A) and Martin (second group off No. 15) following.
Economon starts off No. 16 with Morales (first group off No. 17), Abelar (second group off No. 17) and Saldana (first group off No. 18) following.

Following the ICON Invitational, Houston opens the month of March when it tees off at the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas on March 6-7.
From there, the Cougars will compete at the MountainView Collegiate. That three-day event will be held at MountainView Country Club in Saddlebrook, Ariz., on March 17-19.
