Cougars come up short, look to bounce back Saturday
HOUSTON – Houston Baseball could not solve Cal starter Ian May who tossed 8.0 scoreless innings, leading the Golden Bears to a 7-0 victory over the Cougars in the season opener Friday night from Sanders field at Schroeder Park.
Key Innings
4th | Cal (1-0, 0-0 Pac 12) jumpstarted the scoring, putting across three runs on as many hits. Center fielder Rodney Green Jr. used an infield single to put Cal ahead 1-0. Four batters later, right fielder Kade Kretzschmar produced an RBI-groundout and second baseman Jack Johnston added a two-out RBI single to put the Golden Bears ahead 3-0.
5th | The Golden Bears added on in the fifth. Green Jr. clubbed a three-run home run, taking advantage of Cougar (0-1, 0-0 American)Â miscues courtesy of a leadoff error and five-pitch walk. Cal needed just the one hit to extend its lead to 6-0.

7th | Sophomore Caleb Lomavita extended Cal's lead to 7-0 on a solo home run to left field. The Golden Bears made the most of their seven hits, coming against five Houston pitchers.

The two teams return to action at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Houston will send left-handed pitcher Kyle LaCalameto to the mound against Cal right-hander Paulshaun Pasqualotto. - Junior Zach Arnold added a single in the first inning.
- Houston starter Cade Citelli (0-1) retired the side in the first three innings, with five strikeouts before running into trouble with Cal's offense. The right-hander allowed three runs on as many hits alongside five strikeouts and two walks in 4.0 innings.
- All five Houston pitchers made their Cougar debuts. The group included Citelli, Travis Phelps, Graysen Drezek, Owen Woodward, and Paul Schmitz.
