OPENING WEEKEND AT HOME
This will be the first time in nearly a decade that Houston has hosted a Power 5 program on Opening Weekend with the last coming against Minnesota in 2015 when the Cougars swept the Gophers at Cougar Field.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first time Cal and Houston have faced off in a weekend series. The two teams met in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a single game on Opening Weekend last season. Prior to that, the Bears made a trip to Houston to play at Minute Maid Park in 2013. Houston's lone win against Cal was in Berkeley, Calif., in 2010 when the Cougars came away with a 12-9 win.
LAST TIME OUT
Houston's turnaround season came to a close in the American Conference Championship with a 6-1 loss against East Carolina. The Cougars matched the best year-to-year improvement in their history thanks to an 18-game turnaround in the win column.
BATTERS BACK
Houston Baseball returns eight of nine position players for the 2023 season. The returners are highlighted by senior shortstop Ian McMillan, junior catcher Anthony Tulimero and junior third baseman Zach Arnold.
NEW FACES
The Cougars have added a multitude of new faces to their roster for the 2023 season. Six of the new players comes to Houston with previous Division I experience including from Power 5 schools LSU, Ole Miss and Baylor.
PRESEASON PICKS
With its runner-up finish in the 2022 American Conference Championship, the Cougars were picked to finish second in the league's preseason poll behind only defending champion East Carolina.
This will be Houston's final year competing in the American Athletic Conference before it moves to the Big 12 Conference on July 1. Cougar Baseball boasts a storied history in The American highlighted by five conference titles. Houston has made its presence known in The American with Coach of the Year awards, player awards and a multitude of all-conference nods. Since joining The American in 2014, Houston is tied for the league lead in regular season championships (3) and all-conference honorees (41) and paces the conference outright in tournament championship game appearances (5).
