Duo mark first two hires of Head Coach Willie Fritz era
HOUSTON – Shane Meyer, a former FootballScoop Operations Director of the Year, and Wes Fritz, whose recruiting efforts vaulted Tulane onto the national stage, have joined University of Houston Football as Head Coach Willie Fritz's first two hires, the first-year Cougar head coach announced Thursday.
Meyer will serve as the program's Associate Athletics Director/Director of Football Operations after spending eight seasons at Tulane (2016-23) in the same capacity. Wes Fritz has been tapped as Houston's Director of Personnel/Recruiting after maintaining the same role, also over the same eight-year period with the Green Wave.
The duo played key roles in Tulane's transformational success. Meyer handled administrative duties for the Green Wave program, including travel, scheduling of practice times and overall organization of the program. Wes Fritz, the son of Willie Fritz, managed all recruiting events and maintained the Green Wave's recruiting database and recruiting board.
Behind Fritz's recruiting efforts, Tulane saw multiple players selected in the NFL Draft in three of the last four years (2020, 2021, 2023). Since the NFL Draft moved to seven rounds in 1994, Tulane never had multiple players drafted in back-to-back seasons before doing so in 2020-21. Between 2020-23, the Green Wave placed 10 players in the NFL, including 2023 Third Round NFL Draft selections Tyjae Spears (81st pick) and Dorian Williams (91st pick).
Both Fritz and Meyer held similar positions during 2014-15 at Georgia Southern. During the two-year stretch, the Eagles posted a combined record of 17-7 including capturing the 2014 Sun Belt Conference title alongside the school's first NCAA postseason bowl game with a berth in the 2015 GoDaddy.com Bowl.
During his two seasons at Georgia Southern, Fritz worked primarily with recruiting and player personnel. Before earning his master's degree from Georgia Southern, Fritz received his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State in kinesiology in 2013. At Sam Houston, Fritz was a two-year letterwinner for the Bearkats in basketball after earning his associate degree from State Fair Community College. There, he was named the Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Meyer was a highly decorated placekicker under Head Coach Willie Fritz at Central Missouri. As a student-athlete, Meyer was a four-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) selection from 1995-98 and was a three-time Academic All-American.
