Cougars Set to Open 2023-24 Season Against Air Force on Friday

Houston tips off at 7 p.m., against Air Force at Fertitta Center
HOUSTON– The University of Houston women's basketball team opens its inaugural season as a member of the Big 12 Conference against Air Force at 7 p.m., Friday inside Fertitta Center.
The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2023-24 schedule poster.

THE GAME
- Houston is making its season debut.
- Houston has won seven-consecutive home opening games dating back to the 2016 season.
- This marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
- Air Force defeated Denver in its season opener on Tuesday night, 65-63.
- The Cougars fell in the program's first conference tournament championship game since 2004 to East Carolina 46-44.
- Senior Kamryn Jones led the team in scoring with 13 points.
- The Cougars held East Carolina to just two points in the first quarter of the championship game.
- A slow third quarter where Houston scored seven points sunk the Cougars' chance at the game.
- Houston returns four starting players from the 2022-23 team that earned a spot in the first conference tournament game since 2004. Returning All-AAC First Team selection Laila Blair, and graduates Bria Patterson and Britney Onyeje along with senior Kamryn Jones.
- Head Coach Ron Hughey is entering his 10th season with the Cougars.
- The Cougars added seven newcomers highlighted by five Division I transfers – four Power 5 transfers – one JuCo All-American and one freshman.
- Both Britney Onyeje (168) and Laila Blair (145) have their eyes set on the Houston all-time three-pointers made record of 226 set by Brittney Scott (2007-11).
- A season after being the shortest team in the league and relying on its full court press to make teams uncomfortable, the Cougars are the 11th tallest team in the league this year an average height of 5-11.
- Ahead of the 2023-24 season, the Guy V. Lewis Development Facility saw a face lift to the second story; the floor Houston Basketball has its locker rooms, team rooms and cafeteria.
- Fairfield played a nation-leading six overtimes in 2022-23 but Houston was the only school to play eight overtime periods in the country during the regular season.
