Rehr signs an outside hitter and a middle blocker as signing period opens
HOUSTON – Middle blocker Addisyn Pohl and outside hitter Lily Barron have signed with the University of Houston Volleyball program, Head Coach David Rehr announced on National Signing Day on Wednesday.
"We are really excited about the student-athletes and people we are adding into our program," Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Taylor McColskey said. "This is a very exciting time for the Houston Volleyball program and recruits are starting to take notice. This class was our first class as members of the Big 12 Conference and we think they can help us fight for conference titles in the future."
ADDISYN POHL – MIDDLE BLOCKER – WADDELL, ARIZONA
Pohl joins the Cougars following a preps career with Shadow Ridge High School under Coach Sean Carlton while also playing club volleyball for Revolution Volleyball Academy under coaches Carl DeFriez, Jess Knecht and John Sharpnack.Â
"Addisyn was our first commit in the 2024 class," McColskey said. "She believed in the vision and direction of our program and committed to us early on in the process. We are so excited to have Addisyn join our team. Her physicality and blocking are what caught our interest initially. In watching her further, we were really impressed with her blocking mechanics and her technique. She does some incredible things with her blocking, well beyond her years. We are excited to see how she can develop in our gym and the type of impact she can make on our program."
Entering her senior year, Pohl had played in 150 sets for Shadow Ridge, amassing 374 kills and 111 blocks while adding 47 service aces.Â
Pohl has participated in the USA National Team Development Program as recently as 2021 and was named to the 2022 AVCA Phenom List. She also was a member of the 2022 USAV Nationals All-Tournament team, was the 2022 6A West Valley Offensive Player of the Year and was a 2021 All-District First-Team selection.Â
While entering her own collegiate career, Pohl has a long family history of collegiate athletic success. Her mother, Angie, played volleyball at Syracuse from 1991-94 (also playing a year of professional volleyball in the NCA) and currently sits in a tie for sixth on the Orange's single-season total blocks list with 166 in 1992. The mark also sits at third in the side-out scoring (1987-2000) era. Her brother, Logan, played a season of volleyball at Cal State Northridge while her cousin, Victoria, played volleyball for North Alabama from 2013-16.Â
LILY BARRON – OUTSIDE HITTER – LEWIS CENTER, OHIO
Barron arrives in Houston after playing high school volleyball at Olentangy Orange High School under Coach Katie Duy and a club career with Mintonette Sports under coach Ronnie Mahlerwein.Â
"We are so excited to have Lily join our program," McColskey said. "She is someone we targeted early on in the process and have really enjoyed watching her develop over the years. Lily is a true six-rotation outside hitter. She can pass, defend and attack at an elite level. She understands how to manage risk as an attacker and can score with a number of different shots. She is an impact player on the left and we can't wait to see how she develops."
In 234 sets so far for Olentangy Orange, Barron has posted 706 kills, averaging 3.0 per set, and a .271 hitting percentage. She's also added 498 digs and 79 blocks with 61 service aces.Â
Barron helped Olentangy Orange reach the Regional Finals (quarterfinals) of the 2021 OHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships her sophomore season and was a 2022 First Team All-OCC and 2022 First Team All-Central District selection.
This season, Barron has earned a spot on VolleyballMag.com's Player of the Year Watch List and was an AVCA High School All-America Honorable Mention. Barron and Olentangy Orange won the OCC Championship, with Barron helping the team go 10-0 in conference play while not dropping a single set. The team is currently set to play in the OHSAA Division I State Championship Semifinals on Friday.Â
