Houston plays all nine league competitors including five series at home
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team will begin its inaugural Big 12 Conference slate on March 10 and will face all nine league schools that sponsor softball, the Big 12 office announced Thursday. The Cougars' league schedule will include 27 games, including 15 at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Head coach Kristin Vesely's squad will face five teams in league play that reached the 2023 NCAA Tournament including hosting Texas and Oklahoma State. The Big 12 finished as the top softball conference according to the NCAA's RPI last season, with the league posting a collective 254-123-1 record while sending two teams to the Women's College World Series, including national champion Oklahoma.
Houston opens its Big 12 schedule by hosting Texas for a three-game series from March 8-10 before turning its attention to its first road conference series at Iowa State from March 15-17. The Cougars renew a nearly annual battle with the Longhorns, with the pair having played 35 times since 2001, while Houston holds a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series against Iowa State.
The team returns home for a weekend set against Kansas (March 22-24) then closes out the month at BYU (March 28-30). The Cougars battle the Jayhawks for the first time since 2010 and BYU for the first time since 2013. Houston boasts winning records against both squads, including a 2-1 record against the Kansas and a 6-1 record against BYU.
In April, Houston plays back-to-back weekends at home against Oklahoma State (April 5-7) and familiar first-year league foe UCF (April 12-14). Houston holds an 8-5 lead in the all-time series against the Cowgirls and continues a rivalry with the Knights that has seen the teams play 54 times since 2006.
The team then travels to face three-peat national champion Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. (April 19-21). Houston closes its home schedule April 26-28 against Texas Tech, heading into the weekend with a 5-3 lead in the all-time series, and wraps its league slate at Baylor (May 3-5), who the Cougars have played annually since 2018 and 38 times since Houston's inaugural season in 2001.
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship runs May 8-11 at USA Softball Hall Of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. All 10 Big 12 teams will play in a single-elimination bracket with the top six seeds receiving a first-round bye.
