Houston moves to 4-0 for best start since 2010-11 season
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program knocked off New Orleans, 81-54 at Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon. The win over the Privateers moves the Cougars to 4-0 for their best start since the 2010-11 season.
Rebounding was the name of the game as Houston (4-0, 0-0 Big 12) outrebounded New Orleans (1-4, 0-0 SLC), 62-36. Senior forward Kamryn Jones tallied 11 boards and freshman guard Kierra Merchant collected a career-high nine rebounds.
Graduate guard N'yah Boyd led Houston with 21 points, one shy of tying her career-high of 22. Graduate forward Bria Patterson scored 16 points, while junior forward Maliyah Johnson tallied 13 points, knocking down a team-high three 3-pointers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston remains at home for a mid-week tussle against Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m., Wednesday, for Way Back Wednesday: Study Break Night.
The Cougars wrap up their six-game homestand at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, against Florida A&M for The Shasta Express/Teacher Appreciation Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior guard N'Yah Boyd opened the game for the Cougars with a three-pointer and scored the first 10 points for Houston.
- In the second quarter, the Cougars went on two separate runs, a 6-0 and 10-0 run to give Houston a 47-30 lead at the half.
- Patterson hit a three to open a 7-0 scoring run to start the third quarter.
- Houston held New Orleans to nine points in the third quarter, the second time holding an opponent under 10 points in a quarter this season (six, first quarter vs Sam Houston, Nov. 14, 2023).
- Houston outrebounded the Privateers 62-36, collecting the most rebounds in a single game this season.
- The Cougars scored 32 second-chance points and held the Privateers to six points.
- Houston is now 2-0 against New Orleans.
- Houston went a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe.
- This marks the first time the Cougars have pulled down 60+ rebounds since the 2020-21 season, as they earned 61 rebounds against Temple (Jan. 20, 2021).
- The Cougars shot 52% from the field goal in the second half.
- Boyd is now 24 points shy of eclipsing 1,000 career points.
- Jones recorded a season-high 11 rebounds against UNO.
- Merchant collected a career-high nine rebounds and four blocks.
