HOUSTON- In its first meeting since the 2002-03 season, the University of Houston Women's basketball program defeated Sam Houston State, 106-65 inside Fertitta Center on Tuesday evening.
This marks the second consecutive game in which the Cougars (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) scored 106 points against the Bearkats (1-1, 0-0 CUSA). The last meeting against Sam Houston resulted in a 106-54 victory at Hofheinz Pavilion on Dec. 1, 2002.
Graduate forward Bria Patterson and freshman guard Kierra Merchant led the Cougars with 19 points each, as four others scored in double figures. Every Houston player who entered the game scored a field goal.
The Cougars started the game on a 12-0 run and forced nine turnovers in the first quarter. Senior guard Laila Blair continued her scoring prowess with nine of her 17 points in the opening frame.
Patterson and Merchant took over the second quarter as they scored 10 and 11 points, respectively. In the final seconds, Patterson sealed the quarter with a 3-pointer to take a commanding 44-point lead into the locker room. Houston's defense stayed strong in the first half, allowing only 16 points through the first two quarters.
As the game moved into the third quarter, the Cougars continued their strong performance, blocking the Bearkats' attempt to narrow the gap. Houston tallied 21 points in the third quarter, with contributions from eight athletes.
