HOCKLEY, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program split its matches during the second day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks on Tuesday. The Cougars knocked off No. 9 seed Cincinnati 3-2-0, before falling to No. 3 seed Baylor, 4-1-0, in the afternoon session on the 7,007-yard, par-71 course.
Super senior Austyn Reily, sophomore Hudson Weibel, junior Wolfgang Glawe and junior Jacob Borow each posted 1-1 records in the two matches.
This is the Cougars' first match-play action during the 2023-24 season.
(10) HOUSTON defeats (9) CINCINNATI, 3-2-0
The Cougars took a 3-2-0 win over Cincinnati in their first match of the day Tuesday.
Starting off No. 16, Reily won each of his first four holes against Ty Gingerich and never led by fewer than two holes for the rest of the way in a 3&1 victory. With that, the Pottsboro, Texas, native enjoyed his second win at the tournament.
Beginning at No. 18, Glawe was tied with Cole Imig through eight holes. Fortunately, the St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native won five of the next six holes at Nos. 8-13 en route to a 5&4 win.
Making his debut at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament off No, 16, Borow fell behind William McDonald on his first hole but quickly rallied to win three straight holes at Nos. 1-3.
McDonald trimmed the lead to one hole at No. 1 and again ats No. 14, but both student-athletes halved the last hole for Borow to take a 2&1 win.
Senior Santiago De La Fuente and Weibel each dropped 4&3 decisions to Ryan Ford and Connor McNeely, respectively.
(10) HOUSTON lost to (3) BAYLOR, 4-1-0
Weibel won his third match of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament with a resounding 6&5 victory over Trey Bosco. Starting off No. 4, the Dallas native won two of the first three holes and then rattled off four straight wins at Nos. 7-10 to build a 5 up lead.
Unfortunately, that would be the Cougars' only win against the Bears.
Borow and De La Fuente dropped 1 up matches to Davis Ovard and Johnny Keefer, respectively, while Glawe and Reily each fell 3&2 to Zach Heffernan and Luke Dossey, respectively.
