Jarace Walker Named The American Freshman of the Week

Senior guard Marcus Sasser earns spot on Honor Roll for second time in 2022-23
HOUSTON – For the third time this season, University of Houston freshman forward Jarace Walker was honored as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Senior guard Marcus Sasser joined Walker in collecting weekly awards Monday, being named to the league's Honor Roll for the second time this season.
The Cougar duo led Houston to a pair of wins over SMU and at Cincinnati as the #1/1 Cougars improved to 16-1 overall and stood alone atop the American Athletic Conference standings with a 4-0 mark.
ABOUT JARACE WALKER
Walker averaged 22.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game to lead the Cougars in win over the Mustangs and the Bearcats.
Against SMU, he scored 11 of Houston's first 13 points inside the Fertitta Center as Houston built a 24-4 lead through the game's first 7.5 minutes.
Walker tied his career high with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards, for his second double-double of the season.
Playing under the weather at Cincinnati, the New Freedom, Pa., native totaledl 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting and grabbed five rebounds with three steals in only the Cougars' third road win in 20 tries against the Bearcats in school history.
With his performance, Walker stands second among the Cougars with 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
ABOUT MARCUS SASSER
Sasser averaged 15.0 points with 3.5 rebounds and team highs of 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game to be named to the Honor Roll for the second time in 2022-23.
The Dallas native scored 14 points with four 3-pointers three steals and tied his career high with seven assists against the Mustangs.
Sasser followed that with 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and a game-high five steals at Cincinnati.
This season, Sasser leads the Cougars and ranks fifth in The American with 15.8 points per game. He also leads the team with 1.9 steals per game and is second on the squad with 2.9 assists per game and a 2.08 assist-turnover ratio.
Tulane guard Jaylen Forbes was named The American Player of the Week. UCF guard C.J. Kelly, Cincinnati forward Viktor Lakhin, Memphis forward DeAndre Williams and Tulsa forward Bryant Selebangue joined Sasser on the Honor Roll.

• Walker, Sasser and the Cougars return to the friendly confines of the Fertitta Center to play host to South Florida at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11. That game will air on ESPN+.
