Freshman forward collects weekly honor for fourth time in 2022-23
HOUSTON – For the fourth time this season, University of Houston forward Jarace Walker was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week.
In games against Tulane and Temple last week, Walker averaged 7.5 points per game and led the Cougars with 10.5 rebounds, including 3.0 offensive boards per contest.
In Tuesday's road win over Tulane, Walker led Houston with nine rebounds and added six points with a pair of assists as the Cougars moved to 6-0 to start league play.
The New Freedom, Pa., native followed that with a nine-point, 12-rebound performance against Temple inside the Fertitta Center on Sunday. It was his fourth game with double-digit rebounds this season.
Walker also added a block with a pair of steals against the Owls.
This season, Walker ranks third among the Cougars with 10.1 points per game but stand second on the team with 6.6 rebounds per contest. His rebounding average ranks fourth in Houston freshmen single-season history, trailing only Clyde Drexler (10.5 rpg in 1980-81), George Williams (8.5 rpg in 1999-00) and TaShawn Thomas (8.2 rpg in 2011-12).
Memphis forward DeAndre Williams was named the league's Player of the Week. Cincinnati guard Landers Nolley II, South Florida guard Tyler Harris, Temple guard Damian Dunn, Tulsa forward Bryant Selebangue and Wichita State guard Jaykwon Walton were named to the weekly Honor Roll.
