Junior Kamryn Jones’ first double-double not enough as Cougars suffer first conference loss
TULSA, Okla. – A block by graduate Tatyana Hill with 13 seconds remaining set up a game-tying three-point attempt by junior Laila Blair with seven seconds left, but the shot did not fall as the Houston women's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season 70-68 to Tulsa on Saturday in Reynolds Center.
Houston (6-11, 3-1 American) received a career-best game from junior Kamryn Jones who recorded her first-career double-double on career-highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Tulsa (14-3, 4-0 American) capitalized on mainly three scorers, sophomore Temira Poindexter's game-high 22 points, 18 points from senior Maddie Bittle and 16 from sophomore Delanie Crawford. Only six Hurricane players scored in the game compared to all nine Cougars that saw action.
The Hurricane jumped out to a fast start, shooting 56.3 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc in the first quarter. Tulsa outscored Houston 28-15 in the first quarter, the most points Houston has allowed in any quarter this season.
Houston battled back and chipped away at the deficit with a 19-point second quarter. The Cougar defense stepped up too, holding the Hurricane, who ranked second nationally in three pointers made per game (10.6), without a three-pointer in the second quarter.
Jones led the way for Houston with 12 first half points, including six of the points coming in a two-minute stretch at the beginning of the second quarter.
Tulsa started the third quarter on a 9-0 run before Houston was able to score thanks to an and-one layup by senior Bria Patterson, converting the three-point play on the Cougars' first free throw attempt of the game.
The Hurricane took a 14-point lead into the final quarter, but a 9-0 run by Houston to open the final frame cut the deficit to just five points.
The Cougars kept clawing away and set up the game-tying three-point attempt that did not go. Blair hit a three at the buzzer to make it a two-point loss instead of a five-point loss.
