Tennis Opens Day One of ITA Texas Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman Gabriela Cortes advanced to the main singles draw after two play-in rounds on Thursday at the ITA Division I Women's Texas Regional Championship at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU.

The University of Houston Tennis program commenced play in the qualifying singles round with Cortes, Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Elena Trencheva picking up wins to advance to the round of 32. Cortes defeated Baylor's Brooke Thompson (6-1, 6-3 (10-3) in a tiebreaker to advance to the main singles draw.

The Cougars found success in the doubles round of 64 with Laura Slisane/Sophie Schouten, Maria Dzemeshkevich/Sonya Kovalenko and Elena Trencheva/Cortes all picking up wins to advance to the round of 32.

Houston will continue action at the ITA Texas Regionals on Friday with the main singles round of 64 action beginning at 8 a.m., followed by doubles round of 32 matchups taking place at 3 p.m.
