Houston sweeps Central Arkansas, Alabama in opening games of Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup
HOUSTON – A pair of sweeps by the University of Houston volleyball team over Central Arkansas and Alabama christened the 11th Annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Friday in Fertitta Center. Â

The Cougars (4-1) opened Friday with a 3-0 sweep over Central Arkansas (3-1) before topping Alabama (3-2) in the night cap. Houston is 2-0 against SEC teams so far this season.

Leading the offense, senior Morgan Janda posted 48 assists over the two matches, playing in five total sets.

MATCH 1
The Cougars downed Central Arkansas by set scores, 27-25, 25-18, 25-15 thanks to five aces, and 51.0 points.

Senior Abbie Jackson was a menace from the first set, recording 12 kills in the first frame before ending with a match-best 18 kills.

Jackson tallied her first double-double of the season in the Flo Hyman opener, chipping in 14 digs to go with her 18 kills.

Junior Kate Georgiades extended her streak of 20-dig matches to seven matches in the opener against Central Arkansas, corralling 20 total digs.

Graduate Isabel Theut posted the most efficient offensive line, hitting .316 on eight kills.

MATCH 2
Houston got stronger as the night cap against Alabama rolled on, winning by set scores, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16. Four off the five Houston attackers with at least six attempts hit over .350 in the match, pacing the Cougars to a .301 hitting percentage on the night. The win gave the Cougars redemption after last seasons loss to the Crimson Tide and marked the team's second win over an SEC opponent in 2022.Â

Theut led the Cougars with nine kills and recorded a .467 attacking clip. Sophomore Kellen Morin tied a career-high four blocks in the match and was a part of each Houston block in the match. Â

Georgiades' 20-dig streak ended in the match as the sophomore wrangled in 19 digs in the three-set match.

Houston closes out the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Saturday night against Oregon State (1-2) at 6:30 p.m. in Fertitta Center. Oregon State will play Central Arkansas at 10 a.m. to open the second day of the Flo Hyman Cup.
