Graduate Isabel Theut leads Houston to ninth win, matches career-best 20 kills
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference slate with a hard-fought win over a good High Point team on Sunday in Fertitta Center 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22).
Houston (9-2) ends conference play with a 4-1 record against Power 5 teams and receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll. The Cougars enter American Athletic Conference play perfect at home (4-0) and just one road loss (2-1), at top ranked Texas.
For the fifth time this season, graduate Isabel Theut led Houston with 20 kills on a robust .457 percentage. The 20 kills matches her career-high set at Mississippi State earlier this season.
In a 6-2 offense, Houston's setters Morgan Janda and Annie Cooke dished out 48 assists, guiding the Cougars to a .200 attacking clip in the match.
For the eighth time this season, junior Kate Georgiades wrangled in 20 digs. Georgiades' highlight moment came on set point in the third set, recording her fourth career-kill, and first of 2022.
High Point (7-6) dropped its third match in a row after falling at Texas
SET 1
The Panthers outlasted the Cougars in the first set, hitting .333 as a team on the way to a 25-21 set win. High Point posted four blocks in the set with a pair of aces.
Houston started flat, posting nine attacking errors in the frame even though the Cougars had three more kills than the visitors from North Carolina.
SET 2
An early 8-4 lead thanks to an ace by graduate Kennedy Warren forced High Point to take a timeout before the media timeout. A 6-2 run for the Panthers tied the score at 10-10 before a pair of High Point errors and Houston kills forced another timeout from HPU at 15-12.
Seniors Abbie Jackson and Kortlyn Henderson teamed up with Theut for four kills each in the set as the hosts notched 16 kills in the set and sided out at a 73% rate.
SET 3
A 5-0 run early in the frame in part due to a pair of kills from Theut and a kill and solo block by Tullos, forced High Point into an early timeout.
The Panthers rallied back into the set, hitting .258 in the set with three total blocks, but the Cougars' 14 kills in the set and three total blocks of their own helped take a 2-1 advantage into the fourth.
SET 4
Eight kills without an error in the final set from Theut helped Houston outlast High Point 25-22. The Cougars limited their errors in the set and posted five total blocks on the way to take the set and the match.
Redshirt freshman Barakat Rahmon tallied three blocks in the set and finished the day with a career-high four blocks.
