Career-high 22 kills by Theut, season-high .417 attacking average from Henderson erases 2-1 deficit
HOUSTON – The University of Houston volleyball team fell behind after the first set and then again after the third in the American Athletic Conference opener at Tulane on Wednesday, but graduates Isabel Theut and Kortlyn Henderson powered the Cougars through adversity to take the conference opener in five sets (22-25, 25-9, 24-26, 25-18, 15-8).
Theut had never tallied 20 kills in one match in her career, but already has three 20-kill performances in her fifth Division I season. The Columbus, Texas native hit a blistering .395 in the match, pummeling 22 kills, a new career high.
Henderson assisted with 12 kills of her own on a season-best .417 hitting percentage. Fellow graduate Kennedy Warren put down 13 more kills as the fifth-year pin hitters helped propel Houston (10-2, 1-0 American) past Tulane (5-7, 0-1 American).
Junior Kate Georgiades posted a season-high 33 digs in the match and added an ace to her line. Senior Morgan Janda dished out 34 assists in the match.
As a team, Houston hit a season-high .308 in the match, posting a .371 attacking clip in the second set, .333 in the fourth and a match-best .524 in the fifth frame.
The Cougars has now started back-to-back seasons 10-2 after holding its opponents to sub-.200 hitting efficiencies nine different times this year.
Houston started slowly in the first set, facing a 10-point deficit in the first set being going on a 10-3 run to make the set appear closer than it started.
The Cougars flipped the script in the second set, holding the Green Wave to single-digit points. The nine points by Tulane marked a season-low by a Cougars opponent and the first time the Cougars had held an opponent to single-digit points in one of the first four sets of a match since 2018 (Mississippi Valley State, 9/1/18).
Houston had set point in the third set, but a 3-0 run by Tulane put Houston down 2-1, a position it had been in just twice prior in 2022.
The Cougars handled business in the fourth set to force a fifth set in which a 9-3 start was more than enough room to put away their opponent.
