Cougars take first set, make fourth set interesting, fall in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas – After getting out to a scorching hot start and forcing top ranked Texas to use both of its timeouts inside of the first 15 points of the match, the University of Houston volleyball team fell 3-1 on Thursday night in Gregory Gym (17-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-22).
Graduate Kennedy Warren paced the Cougars' offense with a team-leading, and season-best 13 kills on a .370 attacking percentage. Junior Kate Georgiades led all players with 12 digs.
Houston (8-2) recorded 45 kills in the match compared to Texas' (7-0) 51 kills. The Longhorns out-blocked the Cougars 8-7, but the difference came from the service line, where the home team racked up 10 aces in the match and kept the traveling Cougars out of system in the second and third sets.
With the loss, Houston's eight match winning streak comes to an end.
SET 1
For just the second time in program history, the Cougars took a set from the No. 1 team in the country, taking the first set 25-17 thanks to a commanding 11-3 lead that forced Texas to use both of its first timeouts.
The opening frame saw Houston hit a resounding .600 with just one attacking error as the Cougars staved off the Longhorns attempt to come back.
SET 2
Texas' serve pushed Houston back in the second set, allowing the Longhorns to out-hit the Cougars .250-.067, even though Houston had more kills in the set (10-9). Texas recorded five aces in the set.
SET 3
The third set featured another serving display from the Longhorns, adding four more aces in the third.
SET 4
Houston didn't go away quietly, using five blocks, including a three-point run of blocks.
A four-point run from 7-6 Texas to 9-7 Houston forced the Longhorns into an early timeout.
From 11-11 until 21-21, both teams went point-for-point. A Texas kill and then a Houston attacking error gave the Longhorns just enough of an edge to escape with the set and the match after the Cougars challenged the attacking error and the call stood.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return home for their final non-conference match of the year on Sunday against High Point at 1 p.m. CT. The match can be streamed on ESPN+.
