Houston wins eighth straight, Theut becomes first Cougar in 11 years to hit .600-plus
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Houston volleyball team won its eighth match in a row on Saturday, defeating Kennesaw State in straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-12).
The eight-match winning streak for the Cougars (8-1) ties head coach David Rehr's longest winning streak while at Houston.
Senior Mogran Janda set a career high with five aces in the match, the second-most aces in a three-set match in Cougar volleyball history.
The Katy, Texas, native helped spread the ball around all match, running the offense to a .373 attacking percentage, Houston's highest offensive efficiency of the year and the highest attacking average since the opening match of 2021 against Lipscomb (.381).
Janda had a fond comfort-level setting graduate Isabel Theut on Saturday, dishing 20 sets to the right-side attacker. Theut finished the match with 12 kills on 20 swings, without an error. Theut is the only attacker to hit a .600 attacking clip on 20 attempts since 2011 and she has done it twice (minimum 20 attacks).
SET 1
Theut was virtually perfect in the first set, notching six kills without an error. She teamed up with sophomore Kellen Morin for the team's first three points of the set, combining on a block while each put down a kill.
Houston quietly and efficiently dispatched Kennesaw State (6-3) in the set, hitting .355 as a team in the frame thanks to an ace from Janda and two blocks by Theut and Morin.
SET 2
The Owls started the second set up 2-0 but never led again as the Cougars took a 9-8 lead and never looked back.
An even distribution of offense saw five different Houston attackers notch at least a pair of kills with Theut and graduate Kennedy Warren putting away three kills. Janda recorded three of her five aces in the second set.
SET 3
The most lopsided set, Houston had a 9-1 run early as the more dominant team took a 13-3 lead. The Cougars hit .423 in the set and held their opponent to a -.032 hitting percentage in the final frame.
Senior Abbie Jackson recorded four kills without an error in the set as the Cougars hit .423 overall in the final set.
