
Strong Start Leads to Road Win

Matthews earns two assists to highlight first win of Frias era
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Seniors Madison Dichiara and Janna Singleton led the way for the University of Houston Soccer program which used a 2-1 victory to notch the first win of the Jaime Frias era Sunday afternoon against Sam Houston at Pritchett Field.
The Cougars (1-1-1) outshot the Bearkats (0-3) 14-9 for the afternoon, including a 9-6 advantage on net. Houston looked to get on the board early in third minute when midfielder Samantha Wiehe's shot attempt was saved by Sam Houston's goalkeeper Tatum Krueger.
Following a free kick for the Cougars, senior midfielder Dichiara found the back of the net off a header, assisted by midfielder Caitlyn Matthews in the 41st minute to give Houston a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the start of the second half, senior forward Singleton scored her second goal as a Cougar in the 46th minute following on Matthews' second assist of the afternoon.
Sam Houston's Kailey Pena scored the Bearkats lone goal of the match in the 67th minute following a Cougar foul just inside the 18-yard box which awarded the Bearkats a penalty kick.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to Houston for their home opener 7 p.m., Sept. 1, against future Big 12 Conference opponent Baylor at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
Fans in attendance will receive mister fans and cooling towels while supplies last.
Students will now be able to claim two tickets at no cost to all home soccer matches. Students can claim their tickets by presenting their student IDs at the gate.
