Houston secures first sweep in 2022 behind Henderson, Jackson’s 23 combined kills
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Houston volleyball team didn't record a block until the third set, but three rejections and a pair of aces in the final frame helped pace the Cougars to a 3-0 win over Samford on Saturday.
Houston (2-1) topped Samford (0-3) for the second time in program history (2-0 all-time) and notched its first sweep of 2022 in the process.
Both senior Abbie Jackson and graduate Kortlyn Henderson hit .300-plus in the match, recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively, to carrying the Cougars to a .306 attacking percentage as a team.
Junior Kate Georgiades corralled 20 digs for the second consecutive match and College Station, Texas native added a trio of Houston's eight aces in the match.
SET 1
Graduate Kortlyn Henderson scored four points in a 5-0 run late in the set to help Houston retake the lead and then the frame. The outside hitter hit .600 in the set with six kills.
As a team, the Cougars hit .378 in the frame, tallying 17 kills and a staggering four aces.
SET 2
Graduate Isabel Theut paced Houston in the second set, registering four kills on six swings without an error. As a team, the Cougars went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-10 lead at the media timeout.
A pair of aces by Georgiades and 10 digs in the set helped Houston easily take the set 25-14.
SET 3
Jackson was nearly flawless in the third, notching four kills on eight errorless swings, pacing the Cougars to a 25-21 set win.
Sophomore Bryshanna Brown finished the match with an ace after scoring the first point of the match on her first career kill.
Houston will host the 11th annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Sept. 2-3 in Fertitta Center, welcoming Alabama, Oregon State, and Central Arkansas. The Cougars will open the two-day tournament against Central Arkansas on Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. CT.
