Goalkeeper Haley Woodward decisive in match with five saves
HOUSTON – The University of Houston soccer program opened its 2022 season with its first and only exhibition game succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to LSU Sunday afternoon from the Carl Lewis International Complex.
Houston held the push in the early going, forcing several attacks inside the box and earning two corner kicks inside the first 15 minutes of the match. Despite a couple chances throughout the first half on both sides, the scoreboard remained untouched as both teams headed into the locker rooms all square at 0-0.
Shortly after the start of the second half, a Tigers cross from the right side of the 18-yard box found its way into the net in the 52nd minute to give LSU a 1-0 lead. LSU continued to apply pressure after the only goal of the match, as it produced nine more shots through the remainder of the game.
The Cougars mustered a couple more attacks with three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of play but fell short of an equalizer as the final whistle blew.
Houston registered five shots on goal on the day with two coming from forward Adriana Hutson. Goalkeeper Haley Woodward posted five saves in the match with four coming in the second half.
Woodward, defender Taylor Garza-Freeman and forward Cordelia Cross all supplied full 90-minute shifts, with defender Emma Clarke and midfielder Alex Whitcraft playing 81 and 83 minutes respectively.
