Texas Tech guard will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2022-23
HOUSTON – Guard Mylik Wilson has joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program after recently signing a scholarship agreement, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Friday.
Wilson, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 175 pounds, recently finished his junior season at Texas Tech. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Cougars starting in 2022-23.
"The thing I like about Mylik is that he fits what a Cougar Basketball player looks like to us. He is tough, he is athletic and he has a lot of winner in him," Sampson said. "I also like the fact that he is from Elvin Hayes' hometown."
As a junior at Texas Tech in 2021-22, Wilson competed in 32 games with five starts. He scored 12 points against Mississippi State (Jan. 29) and grabbed five rebounds at Texas (Feb. 19).
Wilson posted 38 steals to rank third among the Red Raiders a year ago with a season-best four steals in a home win over Texas (Feb. 1). He also totaled three blocked shots against Kansas State (Feb. 28)
Before playing for the Red Raiders, Wilson spent his first two collegiate seasons at Louisiana from 2019 to 2021. As a sophomore with the Ragin' Cajuns, he averaged 12.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game on the way to being named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team.
In 2020-21, he totaled 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a freshman. For his impressive efforts, he was named the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and was recognized as a Kyle Macy Freshman All-American.
Wilson, whose first name is pronounced Muh-Leek, was an All-Louisiana Honorable Mention in his first collegiate campaign during the 2019-20 season. That year, he averaged 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
A native of Rayville, La., Wilson was the No. 1 high school player in the state and led the Hornets to back-to-back Class 2A state championships. He was a two-time Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 2A State Player of the Year as a junior and a senior and was a four-time All-District selection.
