Wichita State Evens Three-Game Set

Shockers’ offense delivers 12 runs setting stage for Sunday rubber match

The Shockers (16-31, 5-12 American) evened the three-game series by erasing a pair of two-run deficits, striking for four runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Chuck Ingram contributed a go-ahead three-run home run and sophomore Brock Rodden added a solo homer to jump ahead 6-4 after the Cougars scored twice in the top half.

The Cougars (31-16, 11-6 American) used RBI-singles from redshirt sophomores Zach Arnold and Anthony Tulimero to take a 2-0 lead in the third. After the Shockers evened things up, Houston senior Ryan Hernandez struck a solo home run and junior Brandon Uhse added an RBI-double.

Houston junior starter Kyle LaCalameto (2-2) permitted six runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Wichita State sophomore starter Cameron Bye lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits alongside three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Cougars produced 10-plus hits for a fifth consecutive game. Houston freshman Brandon Burckel raised his average to .306 thanks to a 2-for-3 performance. The second baseman reached base three times and scored twice.

Wichita State's 12 runs were the most allowed by Houston since Cincinnati collected 13 on April 9. The Shockers' top-four in the order finished 9 for 16 with 11 RBIs and seven runs. Ingram (2 for 4) notched a game-high four RBIs while Rodden (3 for 4) struck a pair of home runs.

UP NEXT
The teams close the three-game series at 11 a.m. Sunday from Eck Stadium. Wichita State will send southpaw Payton Tolle (3-5, 3.98 ERA) to the mound. Houston has not announced a starter. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network app.
