Cougars drop series opener 8-4 at No. 21 East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Houston staked claim to a three-run lead before No. 21 East Carolina used a four-run sixth inning and three-run eighth inning to secure the series opener 8-4 on Thursday night from Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Houston (34-20, 13-9 American) used four hits to produce four runs and chase ECU sophomore starter C.J. Mayhue in the third inning. The southpaw, who had held opponents to three hits and one run in his last two starts (15.0 innings), permitted four runs on as many hits in 2.1 innings.

East Carolina (35-18, 17-4 American) used a four-run sixth inning and added insurance in the eighth to notch its 12th consecutive victory. The Pirates batted .444 (8 for 18) with runners aboard as nine different players contributed to ECU's 13 hits.

After allowing a pair of hits, walk and run-scoring wild pitch in the first inning, Houston junior starter Jaycob Deese did not permit a run over the next four innings. In the sixth inning, however, the Pirates broke through, chasing the right-hander with five hits and four runs including a go-ahead sacrifice fly RBI from sophomore Josh Moylan.

Deese (5-3) allowed five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings in the loss. Cougar redshirt junior reliever Maddux Miller allowed three runs on four hits in 2.0 frames. Sophomore Cameron Prayer worked around a hit and a walk with 0.1 scoreless innings.

Houston junior Brandon Uhse sent a two-run single into left center and redshirt sophomore Zach Arnold connected on a line-drive two-run home run in the third inning. The base knock extended Uhse's hit streak to eight games while the long ball was the 10th on the season for Arnold.
