No. 18 UCF used an eighth inning grand slam to defeat Houston in series opener
HOUSTON – The Houston softball team brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, but fell 4-1 to No. 18 UCF on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium thanks to an eight inning grand slam by the Knights.
Senior right-handed pitcher Kenna Wilkey was untouchable for five innings, retiring 15-straight hitters from the second inning through the seventh. The righty struck out seven Knights (38-10, 10-0 American) and did not allow a base hit in the third through seventh innings.
Wilkey was aided by her defense on multiple occasions. Houston (23-21-1, 7-5-1 American) made two diving catches in the outfield and ended the top of the seventh with a double play.
Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for UCF in the eighth inning. The Knights took advantage, depositing a grand slam to right field to make it a four-run game.
UCF's outfield defense helped hold the Houston hitters to just one hit through the first seven innings before Shaw struck a solo home run in the eighth. Shaw appeared to have a three-run home run in the second inning but it was brought back over the fence by the UCF center fielder.
