Houston downs Wichita State, 5-3
HOUSTON – Houston starter Nathan Medrano was lights out, backing a rejuvenated offense as the Cougars bounced back to defeat Wichita State, 5-3 to even the three-game series on Saturday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
Medrano (4-1) set career highs in strikeouts (9) and innings pitched (7.1). The right-hander worked around six hits, permitting just one run alongside two walks. The Gilroy, Calif., native held the Shockers (12-14, 1-1 American) off the board until the eighth inning.
After being held scoreless Friday night, Houston (18-9, 1-1 American) broke through with three runs, helped by four hits, in the second inning. Malachi Lott lined an RBI-single into center field and Ian McMillan crushed a two-run home run for his first of the season.
The Cougars added insurance in the seventh, taking advantage of a Brandon Burckel leadoff walk. The second baseman came home on a Brandon Uhse sacrifice fly before Zach Arnold struck a solo home run, his team-leading fifth long ball, just inside the left field foul pole.
Houston closer Ben Sears stranded a runner at second in the eighth on a pair of strikeouts. The Riverside, R.I., native permitted a two-run home run in the ninth inning but left the tying run at the plate.
Wichita State starter Payton Tolle (2-3) allowed three runs on seven hits across 6.0 innings. Offensively, the Shockers were held to 3-for-17 (.176) with runners aboard. Eight-hole hitter Xavier Casserilla (3-for-4) led the way with three hits and two RBIs.
UP NEXT
The teams close the three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Cougars will send right-hander Derrick Cherry (2-1, 3.65 ERA) to the mound against righty Cameron Bye (2-0, 0.00 ERA).
