Houston Takes on ECU at The American Championships

Cougars set to step foot on the court in the first round
TULSA, Okla. – Six-seed Houston Tennis will face No. 11-seed ECU in the first round of The American Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday at noon from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For all information on the tournament, visit Championship Central. The match can be streamed here.
2022 CONFERENCE ACTION
The Cougars went 2-2 in their four conference regular season matches with victories over Tulane and Wichita State. The two losses came at the hands of SMU and USF.
The last time the Cougars and Pirates faced off, Houston claimed a 4-2 victory (March 30, 2018). The winner of the match will advance to quarterfinals held at 9 a.m. Thursday against No. 3 Tulsa. Semifinals will be held on Friday, and the championship match will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday. The final can be seen on ESPN+.
Seeding was determined by the final regular season ITA team rankings.
SEASON SUCCESS
Four Cougar individuals finished with double-digit wins during the regular season: Maria Dzemeshkevich (12), Sophie Gerits (12), Azul Pedemonti (11) and Laura Slisane (10). During the season, Houston combined for 68 individual wins and finished well above .500 in singles action.
In doubles action, Elena Trencheva and Gerits led the team with seven victories on the year mainly in the third spot.
TOURNEY HISTORY
The Cougars have played 14 matches in the past seven American Athletic Conference Championships. Houston owns a 7-7 record in the tournament and has advanced to the championship round twice, first in 2014 and again in 2015.
In 2021, Houston earned its fourth ever berth to The American Championship semifinals after defeating Tulane, 4-2. The Cougars fell to UCF, 4-0. UCF went on to defeat Tulsa 4-1 in the championship match.
